Literacy Morning
Following on from the success of our Numeracy Morning last term, we invited parents and Governors to school to see literacy lessons taking place and to find out how we had been developing the teaching of literacy over the past two years. In that time the school has adopted the Read, Write, Inc. approach to the teaching of phonics; developed new, highly structured ways of teaching fiction and non-fiction writing; as well as completely revising the way we teach spellings.
These are the comments from the parents and governors who took part:
“Very
impressed with the teaching – all styles! And excellently behaved children.
Well done!”
“A lovely
way to spend a morning and to see how well the children are learning.”
“Enjoyed
the classroom session. Sense of structure and direction.”
“Interesting
to see how literacy is used after the Read, Write, Inc. scheme. Very helpful.”
“Thank you
for an interesting and informative morning. Please congratulate staff and
children on their enthusiasm.”
“I really
like the fact that different styles are being taught.”
“A lovely
opportunity to see a real lesson. Excellent ideas to take home too. Thank you!”
“Lovely to
see children enjoying the literacy sessions.”
“Very
helpful to see how Read, Write, Inc. is taught. Will help at home.”
Enjoyed
this session. Very impressed with the lesson!”
“Interesting
to see how literacy is being taught. Feel more confident in helping at home.”
“Fascinating
to see the huge changes in learning styles over the last few years.”
“Thank you!
Very informative and great to see consistent and creative work.”
“Fun to
watch! A good ‘window’ in on how it all works. Each child participates and
seems to be enjoying the lesson. I liked that each child shows their work to
the teacher, so work can be discussed there and then.”
“Enjoyed
the morning. We watched our class following instructions.”
“Very much
enjoyed the morning – great work!”
“All the
children seemed to be very happy and enjoying the learning experience. Well
done!”

Harvest Festival
Harvest Festival will be held at St Edmund’s church on Tuesday 22nd
October at 1.45pm.
The Harvest
Service will be preceded by our usual ‘Open the Book’ assembly, led by
representatives from St Edmunds’ and Crickhowell Evangelical Church.
A collection
will be held with donations being sent to a charity of chosen by the School Council.
Apologies
for the delay in organising this year’s harvest – this was due to building
issues at the church.
Literacy in School
Following on
from the success of the numeracy sessions we ran earlier in the year we would
like to offer you the opportunity to find out more about how literacy is taught
to your children. On Tuesday 22nd
October we will be opening up our classes to parents to watch a literacy
session taking place. The session will start at 9.10am in the hall before
parents then visit individual classes.
Please be aware
that, because of the nature of the sessions and the limited availability of places,
the class we allocate you to may not be that of your own child. We will ensure,
however, that your visit is of interest and relevance to you. A separate event
will be organised for nursery parents in the near future.
A form is coming home with the children today for you to let us know that you can attend.
Christening at St Edmunds for Years 1 and 2 - POSTPONED
Unfortunately, as Rector Barry is unwell, we will need to postpone this afternoon's mock christening at St Edmunds' church. If you see this message we would be grateful if you could pass it on to other parents of pupils in years 1 and 2.

Parents' Evenings
Don't forget that parents' evening meetings are taking place this week on Monday and Tuesday. You can help us to keep on time by remembering that each meeting is limited to ten minutes; you are welcome to make arrangements to see your child's teacher again if you feel there is more to discuss.
