Read, Write, Inc. Phonics

On Monday 19th September we will be commencing an intensive reading and writing programme called Read, Write, Inc. Phonics. You may recall that we ran a trial period of this programme in the Summer Term following in-depth training for staff and visits to other schools to see the scheme in action. We are now looking forward enthusiastically to the implementation of this scheme which has yielded highly impressive results in other schools.

Read, Write, Inc. Phonics is a lively and vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding). Crucially, they read lively storybooks and non-fiction books with words they can decode, so they achieve success in reading. The more sounds they know the greater the range of texts they can read.

As children are taught to decode and encode, they are also taught to comprehend and to compose out loud. The quicker their encoding the more they write what they have composed out loud. As children have early success in reading, teachers can put all their energy into encouraging children to read widely and often that will propel their vocabulary growth.

One way you can assist us with the success of this programme is by ensuring that your child is in school on time (ideally arriving at 8.55am for a 9am start) every day unless he/she is very poorly. This is because we will be doing Read, Write, Inc. Phonics throughout the school every Monday to Thursday morning until 10.10am. Friday will consist of an equally important literacy development session. In summary, it is very important that children are in school, and on time, every day.

There will be a change in the frequency with which children are heard to read in school, but books for use at home will still be provided on at least a weekly basis. Children will not be bringing spellings home to learn, but please be assured that they will be involved in intensive reading and spelling activities during the Read, Write, Inc. Phonic sessions.

Teachers will be happy to deal with any queries you have about the programme. We are arranging an information session for parents in October with our Read, Write, Inc. trainer. I will have a date for you next week.

We would encourage you to visit the following websites to find out more about the scheme and, in particular, the 44 common sounds. This will assist you greatly when helping your child with their reading and spelling.
